Inflammation of the thyroid can happen soon after delivery (postpartum thyroiditis). This inflammation can cause production of too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) followed by not enough production of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). Symptoms that can occur after pregnancy include anxiety or depression, difficulty sleeping, abnormal heart beats, tremors or shaking, and unexpected sudden weight loss or difficulty in losing weight after delivery of the baby. Patients with a diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) have a higher risk for postpartum thyroiditis.
